Technically modernised. Editorially familiar.
Many editorial teams, two languages and a protected area for university members: the website of HafenCity University Hamburg combines different tasks. Since January 2022, we have been supporting the platform technically, modernising the TYPO3 basis and developing functions further – including an event calendar connected to the information screens on campus.
A grown university platform with many participants.
The website covers degree programmes, research, university organisation and offerings for students. The content is maintained by various editorial teams in German and English. The public offering is supplemented by a protected area for university members.
When we took over support, the platform ran on TYPO3 9. Grown page templates, custom extensions and the connection to the central directory service had to be taken into account in further modernisation.
The website is operated in the data centre of Hamburg University of Technology. We therefore coordinate publications and changes to the system environment closely with the responsible people there.

Technical foundation
We converted the project to Composer, introduced consistent version control and created fixed processes for testing and publishing.
Version changes
The platform was first updated from TYPO3 9 to TYPO3 11 and then to TYPO3 12. Content, editorial rights and familiar page templates were retained.
Internal area
We adapted the connection to the university's directory service to the new TYPO3 versions. The existing university accounts thus remain usable.
Event calendar
We developed a calendar with an interface to the information screens on campus.
Digital accessibility
Navigation, search, forms and other components are gradually checked and improved as part of ongoing support.
Over 2,000 pages across ten levels.
The university accounts remain usable.
The protected area uses the university's central directory service. For the required TYPO3 versions, no directly suitable extension was available at times.
We therefore developed the existing connection further and adapted it to the new versions. University members could continue to log in with their familiar credentials.
Maintain dates once, use them several times.
Events are maintained centrally in the TYPO3 calendar. Via an interface developed by us, selected dates can also appear on the university's information screens.
The editorial team decides directly in the backend which event is transferred. This means that information does not have to be entered again in a second system.
