Over 50 museums in one evening. And every guest plans their own night.
At the Long Night of Museums Hamburg, over 50 museums, exhibition venues and memorials open their doors at the same time. The website bundles the entire programme, supports personal tour planning and helps with orientation between the different locations.
Since 2023, we have been supporting the platform technically and developing it further together with Museumsdienst Hamburg.
Many museums maintain a shared programme.
The content of the Long Night is created decentrally. Each participating museum maintains opening hours, events, images and other information via its own protected access.
Museumsdienst Hamburg checks and coordinates the submitted content. The same data set is then used to create both the website and the basis for the printed programme.
The system thus supports two different phases: before the event, many participants work together on the programme. During the museum night, guests use the website on the go to find events and to find their way between the locations.

Maintain the platform and develop it further in a targeted way.
Technical foundation
After the takeover, we converted the project to Composer, introduced consistent version control and set up separate environments for development, testing and live operation.
TYPO3 upgrade
The system was updated in two technical steps via TYPO3 11 to TYPO3 12.4. The custom input forms, data structures and editorial access were retained.
Decentralised maintenance
Each museum works in its own protected area. The input forms help to capture the required information completely and give notes on image descriptions.
Planning for visitors
Filters, personal selection and map use the same centrally maintained information on museums and events.
Accessibility revised
In 2025, we checked and revised navigation, forms, contrasts and interactive components. The documented state is described in the publicly accessible accessibility statement.
Find museums, plan the night.
The programme becomes your own night.
Visitors can save museums and events in their personal selection. This creates an individual night plan that can be downloaded as a PDF.
The night plan is generated as a PDF directly in the browser. To create it, the personal selection does not have to be transmitted to or stored on the server. Registration is not required for this.
Guests can thus put together their selection in advance and call up the night plan on their smartphone during the event.

Museums and connections at a glance.
The map takes over the locations from the centrally maintained museum data. The information for displaying the museums therefore does not have to be recorded additionally in a separate map system.
Switchable layers show shuttle buses, boat connections and bike stations. This allows guests to see which venues are close to each other and which connections come into question for their planning.

Support for comparable projects.
Bring together many participants on one platform?
If different locations or departments are to maintain their content themselves, we clarify responsibilities, approvals and the shared data structure with you. Building on this, we plan the implementation – as further development of your existing website or as a new project.
